A very common and nutritious component in any Indian meal is Dal. Also known as pulses, they may be referred to as the dried yellow-white seeds of cultivated legumes. Pulses belong to the peas, beans and lentils family.

There are a variety of Dals. Nevertheless, a very important factor is common among them. All the Dals are a rich source of essential proteins and iron. Therefore, it is highly recommended to add a mix of Dals in your food intake.

 

 

Among all the types of dal, these are the most common in India: Moong Dal, Toor Dal, Chana Dal, Urad Dal and Kabuli Chana. Let’s take a look at their health benefits.

  1. Moong Dal: The best part about Moong Dal is that it cooks quickly, has almost zero saturated fats and is easily digestible. This is the reason people with digestion issues are advised to replace regular Toor Dal with Moong Dal. Since it also contains water-soluble fibres; its consumption can be useful for lowering LDL cholesterol and helps you to save one from heart problems. Moong Dal is rich in protein, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron and potassium.
  1. Toor Dal: This Dal is very popular in India, especially in Gujarat. It is the basic ingredient in Sambar. This kind of Dal is rich in complex dietary fibres which help in regularising intestinal movement. Also, the folic acid in this Dal makes it a good one for expecting mothers. Apart from this, Toor Dal is also abundant in protein, carbohydrates, magnesium, calcium and potassium and is low in unhealthy fats and bad cholesterol.

Chana Dal is also a satisfaction for a diabetic as they include low Glycemic Index which controls the surge of sugar level of the body. Also, it is low in excess fat and rich in fibres.
